Even if it was, there would be a minimum age of say 18. So some kids would still be hiding it. It would be taxed heavily to the point where it cost the same as now. People would import cheaper stuff en masse from countries where they really ought to be growing food instead. People would starve and suffer. It wouldn't be legal in every country, so there would still be thriving black markets. People would die trying to control it. Big pharmaceutical companies would jump in to try to hoard their piece of the pie. On the plus side, taxes would go towards government programs, like substance abuse programs. People with terminal illnesses would live longer and more dignified lives. It would clear out something like a quarter of the US prison population, and they could become productive members of society again. The cops could then focus on catching real criminals.

The State does have some business in the living room, depending on what's going on there. Not that I equate weed with any of these, but if, for example, a murder is going on in the living room, if child sexual abuse is going on in the living room, then the state has business there. Admittedly, these are extremes, and I only cite them to make a point.

Attorney Andrew Lokan was making a tongue-in-cheek statement based off a quote by former Prime Minister Trudeau. Back in the 1960s during the legal cases about contraception, abortions and homosexuality, Trudeau declared that ''the state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation.'' All he meant is that private acts that do not cause harm to anyone else are a personal matter and the government has no need to be involved.
